For my unique cabinet design I chose the Pinel & Pinel’s 80’s-inspired arcade cabinet. I saw many sites praise the design but I am actually not a huge fan. It seems to go against everything that is great about indie arcade design. For one, the paneling around the screen prevents your friends from seeing how quickly you can beat their high score. Another is the iPhone capabilities seems to tie in the very technology that nostalgic pieces, such as an arcade cabinet, tend to stray from. The 1080p LCD is nice, but I feel like indie arcade games are meant to have only somewhat decent resolution. As for the graphic design, I appreciate the clean look but I think a cabinet should a tableau of the game you’re paying 50 cents to play. This particular arcade plays over 60 games so I understand the design choice, but the clean sleek looks seems to go against the colorful and often chaotic design of so many of the classical arcade games. It also comes with some serious speakers but when was the last time you thought, “I wish this game was louder?”.
