For my first research topic for Temporary Expert: Antropocene, I was assigned ocean acidification. Ocean acidification, or OA, is defined as the effect of carbon dioxide emissions on our oceans. The ocean absorbs about a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions. At first, scientists saw this as a benefit as it was reducing the amount of greenhouse gases. Later on, the deadly consequences of this chemical process were realized.

I also was able to locate a researcher. Logan Brenner is a third year graduate student at Columbia University in the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and do research at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in the Biology and Paleo-Environment division. Her research interests are rooted in understanding past ocean conditions such as sea surface temperature, salinity, and regional precipitation. She studies stable isotopes and metal content in cores from large coral heads to ask and answer questions about tropical climate change from as recent as a few decades to many thousands of years ago. She is currently working on a project constraining 10-year cycles in precipitation off the Pacific coast of Panama and another project set in the Great Barrier Reef introducing a novel species into the paleoclimate realm. I want to approach this project as a movement study, coming up with particular movements for each node in my system and choreographing a dance with some data art visuals in the background.
